This text is prepared to meet the needs of the student who will continue his mathematics as far as the calculus, and is written in the spirit of applied mathematics. This does not imply that algebra for the engineer is a different subject from algebra for the college man or for the secondary student who is prepared to take such a course. In fact, the topics Avhich the engineer must emphasize, such as numerical com)utations, checks, graphical methods, use of tables, and the solution of specific problems, are among the most vital features of the subject for any student.
